2008 GAME SUMMARY: JV vs. Hazel Park

JV Fall to 1-2 in Heartbreaking Loss to Hazel Park

When I arrived at half-time, Hartland was leading 7-0. The fans told me that our first score was a Danny Richmond to Ryan Conway touchdown reception.

The second half started with a big run play by Phil Annese up the right side line before stepping out of bounds at the Hazel Park (HP) 10 yard line. Richmond took it in from there on a keeper to the right for the touchdown. Our two-pont conversion failed and Hartland led 13-0 with 9:00 minutes left in the 3rd.

On Harland's next offensive possession, Richmond again hooked up with Conway for a 27-yard touchdown pass down the right side line. The extra point was good and Hartland led 20-0 with 7:27 left in the 3rd.

Hazel Park's offense regrouped and began to methodically run the ball on Hartland's defense. Finally, with :33 left in the 3rd, they scored a touchdown and converted on a two-point play — making the score, 20-8 Hartland.

Hartland could not move the ball on their next possession, giving the ball back to Hazel Park. The Hartland defense continued to struggle with HP's run game — allowing them to march all the way down the field for their next score with 8:34 left in the game. They missed their two-point conversion attempt, but Hartland still led, 20-14.

A Hartland fumble on the next series gave HP great field position. Our tired defense again took the field and attempted to stuff HP's run game, but HP had too much momentum and scored again. This time their two-point converson was successful, and for the first time in the game, Hartland trailed 20-22 with 4:56 left in the game.

Hartland's next series started at the 50 after a bad kickoff from HP. Annese had a great run on a jet right for a 1st down. Then Richmond threw a strike to Josh Miller for another 1st down. Hartland was moving in for a score late in the game when Richmond connected with Jordan Quinn on the right sideline. Later that drive, Hartland was facing 4th-and-1 when Richmond ran a keeper on the left side in which he appeared to have crossed the 1st-down marker, but the refs felt otherwise. Hartland turned the ball over on downs with 1:15 left in the game.

Hazel Park finished with a couple of runs to run-out the clock.

It was a disappointing loss for the boys. After leading 20-0 at one point then giving up three touchdowns on the ground was hard to swallow. But, on the bright-side, they kept their composure on the last drive, moved the ball well, and came up just a bit short of pulling out the victory.
