2008 GAME SUMMARY: JV vs. South Lyon
JV Back on Track With 38-6 Win
The JV team moved to 1-1 on the season, picking up their first win — easily defeating South Lyon East 38-6. Although I did not arrive until just before half-time, this is what I was told happened earlier in the game. Hartland went up early 4-0 thanks to great defensive efforts that resulted in TWO safeties. Danny Richmond scored on QB run after stiff-arming and eluding a defender in the backfield. Then it was Ryan Conway's (WR) turn with a pass reception from Richmond for the touchdown. Chad Hunt (RB) finished the scoring in the first half with two rushing touchdowns to put Hartland up 32-6.
I arrived just in time to see Richmond score again just before the half on a long run down the left sideline — juking left and right to avoid would-be tacklers. However, the impressive scamper and ultimate touchdown was called back on a Hartland clipping penalty 15 yards behind Richmond. Score at half time was 32-6, Hartland.
Hartland got the ball first to start the 3rd quarter with the recently-activated, backup QB Taylor Zenner in for Richmond. We went 3-and-out and punted the ball away. Fortunately, South Lyon struggled on their first possession as well and punted the ball right back to us.
Hartland's next offensive possession resulted in another punt. However, it didn't take long for our offense to get back on the field. South Lyon's offense tried to move the ball through the air on their next series, but Hartland's Shane Felix (WR/CB) intercepted their QB and ran it back 15 yards. (Must be a family thing as big brother Jared had an interception last week on varsity against Churchill.) Hartland took over with great field position.
Later that drive, Hartland was facing a 4th and 7 situation when Zenner rolled left and threw to an open Nick Cooper (WR) for the 1st down. A few plays later Hartland again was looking 4th and 7 — this time Zenner could not connect with his open receiver and we turned the ball over on downs.
South Lyon didn't do much at all on their next offensive series and promptly turned the ball back over to us on downs. The 3rd quarter ended with Hartland still commanding a 32-6 lead.
The 4th quarter started with Hartland moving the ball into striking distance again. Felix again showed is talent — this time on offense — laying-out and snagging a pass from Zenner as the rain continued to drench the players.
Hartland's Jordan Martin intercepted South Lyon's QB at mid-field with 9:28 left in the 4th. Matt Jackson (RB) ran the ball hard the entire second half — and at 5:11 left of the 4th, he punched one in off-tackle left for his first score. The extra-point snap was mishandled due to the rain, and it threw-off the timing of our kicker — who missed the kick just right of the goal post. Hartland led 38-6.
On the ensuing kick-off, Hartland's Mike Bair absolutely blew-up the wedge-man as South Lyon tried to conceal their ball carrier. Bair's hit messed-up their plan and they had to start with poor field position. That was the biggest hit of the second half — possibly the whole game!
Out defense remained tough. Nick Colaianne slipped through the offensive line to sack their QB deep in their own territory. Then Youssef Darwich stepped-up and delivered another crushing hit to one of South Lyon's outside receivers. This forced South Lyon to punt and Conway's return gave us great field position on South Lyon's 20 yard line. From there we ran-out the clock to preserve the win.
Way to rebound from last week, boys! Looking forward to next week! Go Eagles!
