2007 GAME SUMMARY: Varsity vs. Milford

Week #7: Hartland Spoils Milford's Homecoming

Hartland improved their record to 3-4 after a huge victory on Friday night over the Milford Mavericks, 42-40.

This win was an even more important win than last week's over Pinckney. The players pushed hard the entire game — proving to themselves that they can play four full quarters of football.

As one could tell by the score, it was an offensive night. Milford's fast backs were tough to contain and gave us fits all night — even on special teams. But, it was Hartland's ground game that was most impressive.

The fourth quarter was as about as exciting as it gets with a total of six, back-and-forth touchdowns between the two teams.

Leading Hartland was senior running back, Drew Mixter, who finished the night with 205 yards and four touchdowns. Junior quarterback, Chris Cagle, also had a few key runs and passes that helped keep Hartland in the game.

The boys are riding a two-game winning streak and will now prep for this week's homecoming showdown with Novi. The last two years have been in favor of Hartland — last year squeaking out a 6-0 win, and in 2005 the unforgettable homecoming win.

FIRST QUARTER

NOTE: Due to my out of town travels, this week's summary is a condensed version.

Milford scored first on a 3-yard run. The extra point kick was good and Milford led 7-0 with 10:38 left in the 1st.

Hartland's Vonn Jones returned the ensuing kickoff all the way back for a 97-yard touchdown (SEE VIDEO #1084). Zach Minor's extra point kick was good — making the score tied at 7 with 10:26 left in the 1st.

Milford scored again at the end of the 1st quarter on a long run. The kick was good — making the score 14-7, Milford.

SECOND QUARTER

It was a scoreless 2nd quarter as each team's defense came up with some big plays to stop the opposing offense's long drives. Milford led at half-time, 14-7.

THIRD QUARTER

Hartland came out in the second half more prepared and fired-up than we've all year — and they went right to work. Led by a dominant offensive line, Mixter scored his first touchdown on an 11-yard run at 10:22 (SEE VIDEO #1092). Minor's kick was good and Hartland evened the score at 14-14.

Later in the quarter, Milford scored on a one-yard run, but their extra point kick failed — making the score 20-14, Milford with 5:58 left in the 3rd.

Hartland came right back with Mixter's 63-yard run for his second touchdown with 4:16 left (SEE VIDEO #1093). Minor's kick was good and Hartland took the lead, 21-20.

FOURTH QUARTER

Hartland scored again on a 2-yard run by Mixter (SEE VIDEO #1096) and with Minor's extra point kick Hartland increased their lead to 28-20 with 10:35 left in the game.

However, just like Hartland did in the 1st quarter, Milford took the ensuing kickoff the distance — 83 yards — for the touchdown. Milford attempted a two-point conversion run to make up for their failed kick on the last score, but Hartland's defense stopped the runner short of the goal line. The score was now 28-26, Hartland. The last two failed extra point attempts would ultimately prove to be the decisive factor for Milford.

Hartland answered with a 13-yard touchdown run by Mixter (his fourth) with 8:47 left (SEE VIDEO #1100). Minor's extra point kick was good and Hartland 35-26.

On the Milford's drive, they drove down to the Hartland 18 yard line and scored again on a run with 8:00 minutes left. The extra point kick was good and Milford closed the gap to within two points, 35-33.

The trading of scores was not over. Hartland drove down the field on the their next possession and Cagle punched it in with 6-yard run (SEE VIDEO #1105). After Minor's 6th consecutive extra point kick was good, Hartland went up 42-33 with 4:33 left in the game.

But, the way this see-saw game playing out, 4:33 left was plenty of time for another score from either team. It was Milford's turn — and they delivered. They went to the air for next score — a 22-yard pass with 2:39 left in the game. Their extra point kick was good and they again inched back to within two points of Hartland, 42-40.

Milford's attempted onside kick was snatched out of the air by Hartland's Vonn Jones (SEE VIDEO #1107). Hartland was able to run the clock out to preserve the victory.
