2007 GAME SUMMARY: Varsity vs. Pinckney
Week #6: Hartland defeats Pinckney, 33-16
Hartland recorded a much-needed win Friday night defeating Pinckney, 33-16. The win lifts us one notch in the KVC standings and ties us with Milford (a team that is also struggling this year) at 1-4 in the KVC (2-4 overall). Hartland travels to Milford next week hoping to break the tie.
Hartland was able capitalize on several Pinckney errors (penalties, fumbles, and dropped passes). We also relied on big plays by seniors Greg Matthysen and Drew Mixter to pull out the much-needed victory Friday night. The boys were over-due for a victory and it was nice to see the celebrations at the end of the game. The win should give them good momentum going into this week's contest vs. Milford.
FIRST QUARTER
Pinckney kicked-off to Hartland. Our first drive went 3-and-out. We were then able to hold Pinckney with team defense (SEE VIDEO #1055) and one of several individual efforts by Kyle Summerfield (SEE VIDEO #1056). Pinckney was forced to punt back to us. The punt looked like it went out of bounds at our 15-yard line — maybe the 10 — but the officials marked it at the 5-yard line.
Hartland's next drive saw pass receptions from Chris Cagle to Vonn Jones, Greg Matthysen and Thomas Lashbrook (SEE VIDEO #1057, #1058 and #1060). Cagle also contributed on the ground — scrambling left and keeping the ball on a 1st-down run. The drive stalled when Hartland couldn't convert on a 3rd-down situation and lined-up to punt. The punt was snapped over Brian Olszewski's reach and although we were able to jump on the errant snap, we gave Pinckney great field position on our own 21-yard line with 3:39 left in the 1st.
Pinckney's QB began to show is elusiveness and scrambled down the the 5. But, Hartland's Ryan Scimecek busted through the Pinckney line and stuffed the ball carrier for a loss back to the 10 (SEE VIDEO #1062). On the next play, Summerfield rocked the QB causing him to fumble (SEE VIDEO #1063). Our defenders were sure that Hartland recovered the fumble, but the officials thought otherwise and Pinckney maintained possession. Pinckney then ordered-up some play-action by faking dive right, QB bootleg left, then throwing to the open receiver in the left corner. The extra point kick was good and at 1:07 left in the 1st, Pinckney led 7-0.
The ensuing kick-off brought Hartland out to our own 40. The first play of that drive was beautiful. Cagle connected with the WIDE open Jones for a 60-yard score (SEE VIDEO #1064). The extra-point snap was mishandled and Zack Minor picked up the ball but was immediately tackled. Pinckney led 7-6 with :53 seconds left in the 1st.
Pinckney's returned the ensuing kick-off to Hartland's 38 after starting the return right then cutting it back to the left. To finish the quarter, Kyle Summerfield came up fast from the right side and put a big hit on the Pinckney ball carrier (SEE VIDEO #1065). He was there so fast it looked like he could have almost intercepted the pitch from QB to the RB.
SECOND QUARTER
Pinckney went for it on 4th down, but our defense stepped-up for the big stop and Hartland took over on downs at their own 42 (SEE VIDEO #1066). However, our offense couldn't mount a successful drive and had to punt back.
Pinckney's next drive was able to get them down to our 40 before they were hit with one of several huge penalties on the night. They were facing a 1st and 28 when their QB scrambled left and threw to his receiver. In an amazing display of concentration, the receiver was able to hang on to the ball for the 1st down — even after Summerfield up-ended him (SEE VIDEO #1067). That kept Pinckney's drive alive — but only for a couple of plays longer. Pinckney attempted multiple misdirection fakes, fumbled, and Hartland's Mike Carney recovered on our own 25 with 5:31 left in the half (SEE VIDEO #1068).
On Hartland's next drive, a reverse from Drew Mixter to Matthysen gained a 1st down (SEE VIDEO #1069). On the next play, Mixter had a great cut-back run and took the ball all the way down the right sideline for the score (SEE VIDEO #1070). Hartland's attempted 2-point conversion failed and Hartland led 12-7 with 5:11 left the 2nd.
Pinckney's woes continued on their next drive when they fumbled the ball away again on the first play. Hartland took over and Cagle rushed for one 1st down and threw for another to Jones who looked as if he had the touchdown (SEE VIDEO #1071). Cagle kept it on the next play and punched it in over the left guard for the score (SEE VIDEO #1072). Minor's extra point kick was good and Hartland led 19-7 with 2:07 remaining in the half.
On Pinckney's next possession, they again hurt themselves with another long penalty — but again they were able to overcome the set-back and gained another 1st down. They could not punch it in on three tries, but the were able to move the ball close enough to successfully kick a 34-yard field goal at the end of the 2nd quarter to make the score 19-10, Hartland.
THIRD QUARTER
The 3rd quarter started with Hartland kicking-off to Pinckney. Hartland's defense came out strong with Summerfield and Simancek leading the way (SEE VIDEOS #1073 and #1074). (Summerfield finished the game with 20 tackles.) Pinckney could not sustain their opening drive and punted the ball away.
On Hartland's next possession, The offense was also unable to sustain a drive and punted back to Pinckney with 8:16 left in the 3rd.
Led by the elusiveness of their QB (Sean McEachern), Pinckney was able to get the ball down inside our 10 — only to learn they were hit with another penalty. This time they could not regain the lost yards because they turned the ball over with a fumble. That was a huge penalty and turnover as they were knocking on our door with another score.
Hartland went to work in an effort to capitalize on Pinckney's mistakes. With some powerful runs by Mixter and Cagle (SEE VIDEOS #1075 and 1077) as well as a timely throw by Cagle to Matthysen (SEE VIDEO #1076), Hartland found themselves inside the Pinckney's 10-yard line. A couple of plays later, Mixter punched it in on a 5-yard run for the touchdown (SEE VIDEO #1078). The offensive line blocking was awesome! After Minor's extra point kick Hartland led with a score of 26-10 at 4:08 left in the 3rd.
On Pinckney's next possession, Hartland was called with a very questionable pass interference call that put Pinckney in great field position. After some great defensive plays (SEE VIDEOS #1079 and #1080) the 3rd quarter came to an end with Hartland leading 26-10.
FOURTH QUARTER
Pinckney continued that drive, but on 4th and 15, an attempted pass was batted down by Charles Putz and Hartland took over on downs.
Hartland went 3-and-out on their next possession and punted to Pinckney with 9:11 left. After gaining one 1st down, Pinckney found themselves in penalty trouble again. They were facing 1st and 25 — but they were able to convert for another 1st down two plays later. After another 1st down — and a face-masking penalty assist on Hartland — Pinckney was looking to score from inside our 10. After a few unsuccessful plays, Pinckney's QB found a hole and took it himself for the a touchdown. Their two-point conversion run failed and with 4:51 left in the game, Hartland still led 26-10.
Hartland's Chris Small recovered Pinckney's onside kick attempt to thwart any kind of Pinckney comeback. Feeling energized and close to victory, Hartland's offense wanted to extend their lead and went to work — starting with Carson Pippin's jet run on down the right sideline (SEE VIDEO #1082). After a couple of short runs by Mixter, and a high snap that Cagle was able to recover (but for a loss), Pinckney called timeout. After the timeout, Hartland was facing 4th and 11 on Pinckney's 20-yard line with 2:56 left in the game. We lined up to go for it. Cagle confidently threw a perfect 20-yard fade pass to Matthysen who blew by his defender to the left-back corner of the end-zone (SEE VIDEO #1083). The touchdown and Minor's extra-point increased Hartland's lead to 33-16 with 2:56 left.
On the ensuing kick-off, Minor put it deep, and Hartland's coverage team (led by Lashbrook) swarmed the return man. Pinckney tried hard to make something happen, but Hartland's defense stepped-out again and Pinckney ran out of time. Hartland wins the game, 33-16.
Individual Stats
On offense, Cagle went 7-12 for 153 yards with two touchdown passes and one touchdown run. Mixter had 15 carriers for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Jones had 3 receptions for 94 yards and one touchdown. Finally, Matthysen had 3 receptions for 54 yards and one touchdown. On defense, Summerfield led all with 20 tackles. I didn't get any other stats, but I know Simancek and Putz had great individual efforts on defense.
