GAME SUMMARY: Varisty vs. Lakeland
By David Lee
On Hartland's first defensive series, Greg Matthysen intercepted Lakeland's QB at midfield.
Wilkins scrambled on 4th and 6 for a first down, but a penalty brought it back. Hartland again went for it on 4th and 6, this time Wilkins found Greg M. in the end-zone with 7:24 left in the first quarter (extra point good). Hartland lead 7-0.
Lakeland then took over and drove the ball down to the 20 before their running-back punched it in off the left side at 5:20 left in the first (extra point good). Tied-up at 7.
Hartland received a couple of drive-breaking penalties on their next possession and ended up punting. However, Wilkins' punt was blocked and recovered by Lakeland at their 35 yard line with 2:24 left in the first.
Lakeland could not get the ball into the endzone — instead successfully kicking a 22 yard field goal. Lakeland lead 10-7 with 10:10 left in the second quarter.
Hartland was right back in the game with first-downs by Wilkins and R.J. Bogdanski, but Bogdanski's long pass reception was brought back when he was penalized for spiking the ball on the sideline (out of pure excitement I'm sure).
Hartland then tried a pump-and-go pass play, but Wilkins was hit from behind and fumbled. Lakeland recovered on Hartland's 30 yard line.
Lakeland did not waste any time by scoring on a 20-yard run up the middle (extra point good). Lakeland lead 17-7 with 6:09 left in the 2nd quarter.
Matthysen had a nice kick-return which ended with a late hit penalty by Lakeland. That put Hartland in great field position at the 41. Hartland's passing game began to click with back-to-back completions to Bogdanski and Zach Cooper. (Bogdanski handed the ball to the ref this time ;-) On 3rd down Hartland tried a fake pass that was foiled by Lakeland. That left us with a 4th and 16. Hartland attempted a fake punt, but it never materialized and Hartland turned the ball over on downs.
Lakeland then moved the ball on big gains through our secondary to get them into the red zone.
From there, Lakeland's QB ran left-side and scored from two yards out on what appeared to be a fumble (extra point good). Lakeland lead 24-7 with :23 seconds before the half.
Hartland's first possession of the 3rd quarter began with Wilkins scrambling for a first down. Lakeland's defense started finding the seams in our offensive line — forcing Wilkins (and then Cooper) to scramble or rush their passes.
Hartland again punted, and Lakeland again moved the ball on our defense — eating-up the clock.
Lakeland scored with 3:53 left in the 3rd (extra point missed). Lakeland lead 30-7.
Cooper entered the game at QB to bring some life into the offense, but Lakeland's defense would have nothing of that. On 4th down, Hartland's fake punt (or busted play) allowed for a Hartland first down. After another first down by Chad Fritz, Cooper attempted a long pass to Greg M. who was interfered with by a Lakeland defender. Automatic 1st down for Hartland.
On the next play, Cooper (feeling the defensive pressure again) scrambled right to try and make something happen — but came up short by throwing an interception.
In the beginning of the 4th quarter — after a huge defensive hit by Wilkins — Lakeland punted the ball deep. A flag on that play afforded Hartland the option to have Lakeland re-punt. The second punt had the snap sail over the Lakeland punter's head giving Hartland a 2-point safety with 11:07 left in the 4th. Lakeland 30, Hartland 9.
For the remainder of the 4th quarter, both teams traded possession and substituted players. However, Lakeland continued to move the ball and eat-up the clock.
Game over. Lakeland 30, Hartland 9.
